Welcome to World War One!
World War 1 was started in 1914 and ended in 1918. The war started after the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. The war was fought between the Allied and Central powers. The Allied powers were made up of France, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, India, Russia, Japan, Italy, The United States, Greece, and Portugal. While the Central powers were made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The war involved chemical warfare and trench warfare, so little ground was gained during the war. The war changed dramatically when the United States joined the war after the Zimmerman note. The Allied would soon win the war after Austria-Hungary collapsed and the German emperor gave up his throne. The war ended with over 40 million people either killed, injured, or missing during action. Several government collapsed such as the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and the Russian Empire. World War 1 was ended by the Treaty of Versailles, which was very unsuccessful and took away German land. None of the sides thought this was a good idea and the Germans would eventually try to take their land back in World War 2.
Public support for the war changed dramatically, once the United States joined. The public had heavily supported President Wilson's decision to stay out of the war. But once the U.S. joined the war, the public support reversed and went against his decision to join the war.
